What is EMDR
Therapy Training?
Discovered by Dr. Francine Shapiro, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy is one of the most researched and utilized methods in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other forms of human distress connected to trauma and adverse life experiences.

Whether your goal is to become an EMDR therapist as a specialty, or to integrate EMDR into your existing practice, our mindfulness-infused training program will help you meet your goals. Our program equips you to work with real-world clinical presentations from day one, including how to handle complex and developmental trauma, addressing dissociation, and implementing EMDR into your current setting. Completing our full training approved by EMDRIA is a multi-tiered process, consisting of:

-
Part I Training (3 Days=21 total hours of Lecture and Practicum): Covers the basics of trauma, the adaptive information processing model, trauma-informed stabilization, and the basic methodology and mechanisms of action used in EMDR Therapy. You will be able to practice EMDR Therapy with certain clients after completion of Part I.
-
Part II Training (3 Days=21 total hours of Lecture and Practicum): Enhanced practicum content, covering best practices for using EMDR Therapy with special populations and in the complex scenarios of clinical practice; advanced content on ethics and neurobiology is also covered, in addition to working with the art of case conceptualization.
-
10 Hours of Consultation: Consultation is offered in individual or group formats and is essential to practical skill building as an EMDR therapist. It is suggested participants complete 4-6 hours of consultation after Part I and the remaining hours after Part II. All training consultation work can be done remotely (e.g., phone, Skype, Zoom, etc.). Completion of consultation hours is required before a Certificate of Training in EMDR Therapy can be awarded.
EMDR Therapy Training Format

Curriculum designed by Jamie Marich, Ph.D., LPCC-S, LICDC-CS, RMT/The Institute for Creative Mindfulness

Amber Stiles-Bodnar is a senior faculty network member with The Institute for Creative Mindfulness, and an EMDRIA-Approved Consultant, Trainer and Therapist. Amber Stiles-Bodnar offers the curriculum of The Institute for Creative Mindfulness (EMDRIA #10002). You may view our listing on the EMDRIA website as an official training provider by clicking here.

EMDR Therapy Training Part I and Part II must be completed in real-time and all sessions must be attended for CE credits; no partial credit can be awarded.
It is suggested to take the Part II training within 3-6 months of your Part I training. Corresponding Part II training dates are provided during the Part I training and listed on the training schedule. As of January 1, 2023, you will have 12 months to complete both parts of the training and the required consultation. Exceptions may be granted based on circumstance. If you do not complete in this time frame specified by EMDRIA, you may be required to complete Part I again before continuing.
Certificates of completion of EMDR therapy training are issued after successful completion of Part I and Part II trainings in addition to 10 hours of consultation. Upon completing the tenth hour of consultation, trainees will submit documentation of consultation hours to Amber Stiles-Bodnar Consulting, who record the completion and provide, via email, a certificate of completion to the program graduate. The certificate of completion is a “suitable for framing” document and is different than CE credits offered for each part of training.

Successful completion of this program constitutes completion of the foundational training program in EMDR Therapy, and allows you to practice EMDR Therapy within your clinical scope of practice. Earning the EMDRIA Certified EMDR Therapist distinction requires additional training and consultation you may complete with us or another party if you wish to go on for this distinction.

Part I is approved for 21 CEs

Part II is approved for 21 CEs

The 10 hours of required consultation do not qualify for CEs

A General Note About Approvals
Please also note that APA-approved sponsors are accepted by many state boards, such as California BBS and major licensure boards within the state of Pennsylvania. In both of these cases, separate paperwork does not need to be filled out. Many state boards also accept out-of-state providers, which is why our Ohio approvals appear on every training. In some states, pre- or post-program approval forms must be sent, and you are responsible for checking into the rules of the licensure board in your state as to what is required. Please let Amber Stiles-Bodnar Consulting know if you need support documentation in any way for these pre or post-program approval applications.
Costs, Fees, Logistics,
Eligibility & Informed Consent

Training fees/waitlist: Please refer to our schedule for the posted fees for each training. The costs of each session differ depending on location. At this time, we are not able to offer combined discounts for registering for both parts at one time. Spaces for each training are very limited since we have to maintain a low attendee-to-faculty ratio (10:1 for practicum). Thus, payment is required at the time of registration to confirm your spot. We will keep a waitlist if the training is closed.
Payments accepted: major credit cards, checks, and Venmo. Your registration is not confirmed and your space held until payment is received.

Consultation fees: Consultation is not covered in the cost of the trainings to allow you to work with the consultant(s) or consultant(s)-in-training of your choice. We are unique amongst EMDR Therapy training programs by allowing to choose from a significant number of listed specialists. Having our trainees pay separately for consultation best facilitates this choice and allows you to receive true case consultation, not additional education. Consultation cost ranges between $225 - $300. No APA, NBCC, ASWB, OCSWMFT or other CE credits are awarded for consultation.

Cancelation policy: See policy in FAQs at the bottom of page.

Eligibility to take the training:

Licensed Mental Health Professionals
-
Qualifying medical doctors must be licensed to practice in their state or province.
-
Qualifying advanced practice registered nurses must have a Master of Science in Nursing (or higher) with a specialization in psychiatric mental health nursing and must be licensed to practice through their state board or province.
-
Qualifying Mental Health Clinicians must have a master’s degree in the mental health field (Counseling, Marriage Family Therapy, Psychology, Psychiatry, Social Work) or related mental health discipline and be licensed to practice through their state board or province.
Pre-Licensed Mental Health Professionals
-
These are clinicians who are actively pursuing a mental health license through their state board (or province) while working under a licensed supervisor. Some of these license types include associate, intern, limited, provisional, temporary and pre-license.
-
Qualifying pre-licensed mental health clinicians must have a master's degree in the mental health field (Counseling, Marriage Family Therapy, Psychology, Psychiatry, Social Work) or related mental health discipline and must be actively pursuing a full license through their state board (or province) while working under a licensed supervisor.
Graduate Students
-
Qualifying graduate students must be enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program in the mental health field (Counseling, Marriage Family Therapy, Psychology, Psychiatry, Psychiatric Nursing, Social Work) or related mental health discipline. Students must have completed their core graduate academic coursework and must be in the practicum/internship portion of their graduate program. First year graduate students are not eligible. Graduate students must be on a licensing track and working under the supervision of a fully licensed mental health clinician.
-
Graduate students who would like to take an EMDR Training will need to submit certain documentation (graduate transcript, practicum or internship details, and a letter from their supervisor which includes the supervisor's license information and number) in order to verify their eligibility.
Individuals who only hold a chemical dependency or substance abuse license may be eligible if they are able to show sufficient clinical content on their master’s level transcripts, have a valid license in their state, or have pre-licensure status described above. As these licenses generally do not allow for a mental health scope of practice additional proof is necessary to verify eligibility requirements.

Supporting documentation verifying eligibility would be submitted directly to Amber Stiles-Bodnar Consulting. You may send this directly to: ambersb102@gmail.com or upload the documentation during the registration process. Your registration is not considered complete/confirmed until approval is granted.
Training Code of Conduct & Participant Agreement

Professionalism: You will show up on time and be fully present for each session, acting in a professional manner. You will reach out to your faculty member or any assistants if any unexpected problems arise. You recognize that you will be doing your own work during the practicum portion of the course, and you agree to take full responsibility for addressing your needs in the area of grounding and self-care during the training. You agree to refrain from all alcohol and illicit drug use during the training and agree to speak with your faculty member or any assistant if you anticipate that your impairment due to prescribed medications might pose a problem during the training. The faculty and staff reserve the right to remove trainees at any time if trainee creates an unsafe or unprofessional environment for you or for other trainees.

Confidentiality: There is no client relationship or other privilege that would create a duty rising to the level of clinical confidentiality in this training setting; however, you are expected to respect the confidentiality of other trainees in the group, and your trainer will explain the importance of confidentiality. Trainees who observe a problem with another trainee are expected to bring the problem to the lead trainer or other training staff. Similarly, if a staff member observes an issue with professionalism, they reserve the right to discuss that issue with the lead trainer.
Preparedness for doing your own work: Throughout the training, you will be expected to participate in a working practicum experience in the role of therapist, client, and observer. This means that you will be expected to do a small piece of your own, authentic clinical work. If you are currently in counseling or being treated for a mental health condition, it is recommended that you speak with your provider, alerting them that you are participating in the training. If you have received a major mental health diagnosis (past or present), you acknowledge that you are taking this training and engaging in this practicum at your own risk, and agree to alert faculty or training staff before or during the training if any complications arise. You acknowledge that everyone taking part in the practicum experience is new to EMDR therapy and agree to keep the space as safe as possible for all involved. If any problems arise, you agree to address them with faculty or staff members.

Covid-19 Precautions: We are taking precautions to address mandatory and suggested safety guidelines. We will have personal hand sanitizer for every participant, masks available if you choose to wear one, more space in the training room to allow for moderate distancing and smaller training groups. By registering and attending an in person training you are consenting to receiving in person training services from Amber Stiles-Bodnar Consulting. Amber Stiles-Bodnar Consulting has taken steps to reduce the risk of spreading the Coronavirus within the training space. In addition, you have read the precautions and understand and assume the risk for attending an in person training. For other locations see their additional precautions listed on the registration form.

Do you offer scholarships or payment plans for your training program? We offer our foundational trainings at a low cost, approximately half the price of other EMDRIA-approved training options currently on the market. Amber Stiles-Bodnar Consulting in conjunction with the Institute for Creative Mindfulness are considered private training organizations, our prices are comparable to the EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Programs. Although our training fees do not include consultation, we offer you the option of choosing your consultant, thus choosing how much you spend on the 10 consultation hours required in your training. We keep the costs as low as possible for everyone. Payment plans are offered on a case by case basis. Please reach out to ambersb102@gmail.com to explore this option. A Diversity & Social Justice Scholarship is offered through the Institute for Creative Mindfulness and Amber Stiles-Bodnar Consulting honors and participates in this program. Is finishing the foundational training in EMDR Therapy the same as being certified? No. You will receive a Certificate of Training after successful completion of Parts I & II and your required consultation. At that point, you may refer to yourself as a "EMDR Trained Therapist." If you complete only Part I, you may cite that you have "partial training" or "some training" in EMDR Therapy. Many competent EMDR therapists practice EMDR Therapy with only the Certificate of Training. This is completely acceptable and generally ethical. In our view, the best ethical safeguard is to make sure that some of your continuing education for the rest of your career is directly connected to EMDR Therapy if you're going to continue to use it. After completion of our foundational Training Program in EMDR Therapy, you are eligible to begin the optional process for applying to be a Certified EMDR Therapist through the EMDR International Association. For more information on that process, click here.
-
Will I be able to do EMDR Therapy with my clients after Part I?Yes, with certain clients. Your trainer and small group facilitators will help you determine which clients will be the best fit for starting EMDR Therapy. It is a common misconception that you aren't able to use EMDR until the whole training is completed.
-
Why do your trainings have different prices? We work to keep our prices as low as possible by working with facilities who will offer us discounted prices. Additionally, travel for our faculty also adds to cost. As a result, we can offer some training at lower prices than others. If you register for a training and choose to transfer to a different date or location that has a lower cost, refunds of the difference are not provided.
-
I am interested in EMDR Therapy training but I'm not sure that it's for me. How can I learn more about it and see if your training style is for me?Listen to this complimentary teleseminar recording on EMDR Therapy with Dr. Jamie hosted by our friends at The Breathe Network. The Breathe Network also conducted an interview with Dr. Jamie about EMDR which you can access by clicking here, and the recovery journalist Anna David conducted a very popular interview with Dr. Jamie on EMDR published on Psychology Today which you can read by clicking HERE. ICM also produced and continues to produce the largest collection of EMDR demonstrations on YouTube. We have these videos available by clicking HERE.

What is your refund and cancellation policy? If you need to cancel and we receive your cancellation in writing (email is fine) 2 weeks prior to the training, you are eligible for a full refund less a $25.00 administrative processing fee. If you no-show, you are not eligible for a refund of any kind unless documentation of medical or similar emergencies can be provided within one week after the training ends. In the case of inclement weather, should we cancel the training, your registration would simply be moved to our reschedule date. If the reschedule date isn't available for you we can offer you another date or entertain your request for a refund. If you decide to cancel your trip due to weather and we are still having the training, the best we can offer is to move your training registration to the next available training. All other situations handled on a case-by-case basis. NEW POLICY AS OF 7/1/16: Cancellation between two weeks and one week of the training merits a half refund. All refunds, full and partial, are subject to a $25.00 administrative fee. If you cancel within a week of the training the best we can offer is a half credit towards a future training with Amber Stiles-Bodnar. If you terminate your training or need to leave it early for any reason, you are not eligible for a refund. Attendance at the entire training is required for our program to remain compliant with EMDRIA standards. NEW POLICY AS OF 5/1/20: If you choose to reschedule your training to a later date, we will allow for one transfer. If you are not able to attend the training you rescheduled for, your registration fee will be forfeited and you will be required to pay an additional registration fee if you wish to continue with a future training. Rescheduling requests must be made at least two weeks prior to the training. Any requests for rescheduling with less than two weeks notice will be considered a cancelation and the above policy will apply.

What if I have a complaint? Please send an email related to your grievance to ambersb102@gmail.com. Allow two business days for an initial reply to your grievance. A copy of our grievance procedure is listed below.
-
I need special accommodations for the training. What are my options? All venues used for trainings are ADA-compliant. If there is a limitation, it will be indicated on the location listing. If you require assistance, Amber Stiles-Bodnar Consulting is willing and committed to make reasonable accommodations. Please indicate on your registration form what accommodations you may need and we will reach out to you to discuss them further. You may also email ambersb102gmail.com with questions or concerns or if you need to make such a request. Please allow 30-days advanced notice for any accommodation request to allow us to explore options.
-
I took a Part I EMDR training with another provider. Can I finish Part II with your program? We evaluate these situations on a case by case basis. Generally the answer is yes as long as you can provide verification of your Part I training with the other provider. We do ask you to complete all 10 of your consultation hours with us, including 4-6 of those hours before your Part II training as a refresher and so that you can get acquainted with our training program and style.
-
Do I have to complete consultation between Part l & Part ll or can it wait until both trainings are over?We recommend that you take 4-6 hours of consultation (available in groups or individually) between your Part l & ll training to ensure getting the most out of the Part ll. If for some reason you are not able to complete any consultation between Part l & Part ll you are still allowed to take the Part ll, there will be more catch-up work to be completed afterwards.
-
If I take Part I in your program can I finish Part II and consultation in another approved program? This would be the decision of the other program in question. We cannot make any guarantees.
-
Can I complete my supplementary consultation requirement with any EMDRIA-approved consultant? No. During your Foundational EMDR Training we require that you complete your supplementary consultation with one of our approved consultants, or consultants in training, affiliated with the Institute for Creative Mindfulness. Any acceptations would be made on a case by case basis.
-
What makes your EMDR Therapy training program different from other training providers? We are the only EMDRIA-approved training program that teaches EMDR therapy through the lens of mindfulness. The mindful elements of EMDR therapy were more implicit than explicit when Dr. Francine Shapiro, a student of mind-body medicine, first introduced the therapy. Our curriculum makes the mindful elements explicit. We are now able to train people from the ground up in how to implement mindfulness strategies within the framework of the basic, 8 Phase standard protocol. We have found that this approach resonates for people with previous mindfulness training and helps those without previous mindfulness training to understand, to adapt, and to implement EMDR therapy effectively from day one. Our trainees find that they are more quickly able to apply EMDR therapy to clients with complex PTSD, dissociative issues, and other complicated diagnoses. They also develop the necessary strategies for addressing developmental trauma and healing attachment wounds within a mindful framework. Your trainer is well versed in these concepts, and we normalize and clarify working with dissociation respectfully throughout the training and treatment process. You can listen to Dr. Jamie’s interview about our training program HERE

What do you suggest that I do in preparation for the training? If you are interested in getting some preliminary reading done before the training, we've prepared a guideline to the books we recommend as part of our training, including notes on when best to read each resources. There are several that are useful for you to read in preparation for the training and others that you will be able to best comprehend after the various phases of your training. See our recommended reading and resource list above.

I am traveling from out of town to take the training. What airport do I fly into and where can I stay? Our Cortland, Ohio training location is almost equal distance between the Pittsburgh International Airport, and Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. Either would be a good option. A smaller, non-major airport located near by is The Akron/Canton airport. It appears closer on a map, but is about the same driving distance as the two major airports listed above. Listed below are some hotel accommodations near our Cortland Training facility. Residence Inn Hampton Inn Holiday Inn Express Avalon Golf and Country Club Resort If a training is being held at any other location you will be given the local host's contact information to assist with hotel recommendations.
